TRAIN YOUR REPLACEMENTS.

I personally witnessed the downfall of an executive director that i worked for a decade ago. When his incompetence finally came collapsing down upon him and he was relieved of his command, there was quite a mess to clean up. The problem was, it wasn't just his incompetence that had to be corrected. He had multiplied by hiring people who were less qualified, and hence less of a threat, to him in every area. This organization had a core of incompetence that, like a cancer, had infiltrated every department & nearly caused the demise of the entire organization.
By contrast, Jesus as a CEO was eager and intent upon hiring people he felt could replace him. "Greater things that than i had done shall you do," he promised. Jesus did not hoard or guard the power of his office. He kept teaching and sharing & demonstrating it so team members would learn that they, too, had the power to do what he had done.
In order for him to be so generous with his power, Jesus obviously had to have been extremely secure. He repeatedly affirmed and clearly understood his standing with "the chairman of the board." He never doubted that, when it was all over, he would be sitting at the head Table. His job was to fill that table and make sure others were sitting with him.
The McDermids were asked to take the stage at the GNLD's Southern Africa convention in 2012, and more than half of the over 5,000 delegates /distributors @ the convention were directly or indirectly sponsored by them, in other words, the vast majority of those present at that convention were trained and tutored by the McDermids. To me, that's true leadership. The success of the McDermids at that very convention was not defined by their riches but by the number of people they have trained and empowered. Had they been insecure as leaders, they might have tried to lessen the competition. But in fact, they were busy training their replacement.
Jesus trained his replacements, & so should we!

DESTINY OF PRAISE

Who are we? Why are we here? Most people spend the better part of their existence wondering what their ultimate purpose in life is. Peter gives us rich answers to these foundational questions. He declares who we are: We are chosen, belonging to God himself. God has declared that we are holy &, as his children, we are royalty. Peter also answers why we are here. We are commissioned to declare the Lord's praises to the world, telling of his goodness.
Some people disqualify themselves from their God-given ministry because they think that the call to praise God implies the need for gifting in music. This is simply not true. We can praise God in many  ways besides musically. We can tell others about his goodness. We can worship God through the arts: dance, painting, poetry and the like. We can serve him through our act of kindness, compassion & generosity. We can honour him by our sacrificial obedience, choosing to praise him through striving for excellence in our God-given tasks.
Our purpose is to praise the King of kings and make him known. If this is our desire, he'll surely show us how
Let's praise him!

THE MULTIPLICATION FACTOR

My friend (the young priest) knew he was taking a chance on Mike. He'd been taken advantage of by other street-smart drifters, but his heart wouldn't give up on this one. He took Mike in & showed him God's way out of alcoholism, drugs and perpetual lack. Today that seed of kindness has multiplied beyond his dreams. With help from the church, Mike began a ministry to help other homeless people, and thousands have been fed and cared for as a result.
Growth in the kingdom of God comes through sowing and reaping such as described above. Like good farmers, we are planting seeds of Faith every time we invest our time or money in an individual, a ministry or a business venture. Ultimately, only Jehovah knows what will happen to each seed. He determines the timing & the size of the harvest.
In what ways are you sowing into the kingdom of God?
I pray this day that the Almighty will bless all of us with a generous heart, such that will enable us to sow more into his kingdom IJN. Amen. Olu Akpata(Zûr)

HOW TO HANDLE TEMPTATION

Temptation is an inescapable part of life. As Christians, we're bound to face it regularly. Even God's own son was tempted! By looking at Jesus' first hand experience, we find 3 ways to handle temptation when it strikes in our own lives.
First, fight Satan's deception with God's truth. satan often misuses truth to attack us. He even quoted scripture: "If you are the son of God," he said, 'throw yourself down from here. For it is written: "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you would not strike your foot against a stone." 'Jesus answered,  "it says: "Do not put Lord your God to test."(Luke 4:9-12).
As it was for Jesus, God's word is our best arsenal to withstand the enemy's attacks. We need to hear, read, study, memorize & meditate on the Bible. When we are secure in his word, we will know when the devil uses it to tempt us. Paul calls to the Ephesians, "put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's scheme " (Ephesians 6:11) We must arm ourselves with spiritual weapons to stand against satan. Paul names one of the most powerful weapons, the sword, as the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)
Second, prepare with prayer. Jesus prepared himself to face satan through prayer, and he encouraged his disciples to do the same: "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the spirit is weak"(Mathew 26:41).
The enemy often attacks at our weakest moment. Luke states that Jesus was tempted for the 40 days he was fasting, and the 3 specific temptations recounted in Mathew & Luke seem to have occurred at the close of this period ―When Jesus' hunger was greatest and his resistance lowest. But he had prepared himself through prayer and looked directly to God for guidance. Prayer teaches us, strengthens us and prepares us to face temptation without fear.
Third, reject temptation immediately. It's not easy through! Resisting temptation requires sacrifice. It requires discipline and self control. It's frustrating & sometimes painful. Yet we can not avoid it. So we must look beyond the temptation to our power source. As Christians we have this promise:"God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it"(1 Corinthians 10:13). When he was tempted, Jesus did not begin to consider any of Satan's three  offers. He did not pick up the temptation & play with it. He did not give it a moment's considerations or image what it would be like if he gave in. He looked straight to God and dismissed the temptation immediately.
As the apostle Paul sat in a Roman prison for the second time, he knew he would not be released. He would face death as a martyr. Time hung in the balance. In an emotional and heartfelt letter to his disciple, Paul exhorts Timothy to avoid temptation at all cost: "flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord with a pure heart"(2Timothy 2:22).Paul also knew the danger in giving temptation a second thought.
When we are tempted, giving in is always the easy way out. But when we arm ourselves with God's word & prepare ourselves through prayer, he will give us everything we need to resist temptation.

GOOD STEWARDSHIP BRINGS JOY.

"People who manage resources well soon get more resources to manage".
This is so profound!
Come friends let's dissect this.
Let us consider Joseph, a slave in a foreign land who rose to greatness by faithfully handling his master's resources. His wise stewardship blessed Potiphar's house, and he was steadily given more authority, more freedom and a closer relationship with the master. (Genesis 39:2-6)
Joseph's role as a steward parallels the financial stewardship role God has given us. We are his servants, and he's entrusted us with a portion of his wealth to manage. How faithful we are with those resources is one way God measures how much authority and responsibility he can give to us. In Mathew 25:21, a special bond develops between the master and his faithful servant, who is invited to "share your master's happiness!" We also can share in the Lord's joy by being faithful with whatever money, property or other resources he's entrusted to us.
Think about the things God has entrusted to your care. What could you do to manage his resources more wisely? Let us pray and ask for direction & guidance today IJN. Amen.

IT DEPENDS ON YOU & I

Eric was an eager student of Biblical prophecy. He read each new book on the topic and scanned the news headlines for signs of the Lord's impending return. It seemed God was bringing history to conclusion.
Then one day the words from Mathew 24:14 seemed to leap out at Eric. "And then the end will come".When? When the gospel has been preached to all nations. Eric knew from his pastor's teaching that "nations" meant "ethnic groups" Could it be that Eric himself could influence the timing of the Lord's return? Did it depend to some extent on the obedience of God's people, people like himself, to carry the "gospel of the kingdom" to all the ethnic groups who had not yet heard the good news?
Eric's life was never the same after that day.  He began praying with a new fire for the missionaries of his church, he increased his financial giving to the work of missions. After a time he sensed God's call to go himself. Today he works in a mission, mobilizing & training young people to go and proclaim the gospel to people who have not yet heard about Jesus. As one who loves the Lord's return, he is doing his part to "speed its return"
In what ways does your view of the Lord's return influence how you live?  What are you doing to share the gospel with those around you?

THE BATTLE FOR THE MARKETPLACE.

The marketplace is a spiritual battleground. God intends it to serve the purposes of his kingdom to bless the nations. On the other side, satan is competing to control it for his evil purposes. Through unrighteous trade he seeks to dominate not only individuals & businesses, but also politics, media, education, and even churches and families.
One way satan controls people is through their lust for money. When we think of greed we may think rich, miserly people or the directors of exploitative, multinational corporations. However, greed can be just as prevalent among the ones who have the least. In Asia, this lust for money leads parents to break their infants' legs so that they can use these children as beggars, similar horrible stories of a day old mothers parading their freshly born children for alms and handouts has emerged from the Western part of Africa where i hail from. In America, kids kill other youths just to get their expensive athletic shoes.
The best way to break this spirit of greed is by responding in the opposite spirit ――GENEROSITY *
I fervently pray this day that: God in his infinite kindness & splendour will enrich everyone of us with that much needed spirit of generosity IJN. Amen.

SINK OR SWIM

Peter was a risk taker, a man of action and boldness. When he saw Jesus walking on water, he wanted to join him. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he too walked on water. But when Peter noticed the fierce wind, fear overcame his faith.
To his credit, Peter recognized the One to turn to when things went wrong. He didn't try to swim for the boat. He cried out to Jesus to save him & the Lord responded immediately, and when Peter was safe in his arms, Jesus urged his eager disciple to grow even more in faith.
This loving correction encouraged Peter to keep steeping out in faith, even at the risk of getting into more "deep water." As a result, he developed into a man to whom Jesus could entrust responsibility for building his church (Mathew 16:18)
How willing are we to take risks for Jehovah? Let us ask him in prayers to increase our faith so we can willingly step out when he calls us do something difficult for him.
Happy Sunday my friends!

BE BOLD!

Jesus did not mumble or whisper his message. He did not discuss for hours the safest approach for doing something. He did not go through countless committees to get permission to do something. He was bold!
He shouted, he stomped, he flung tables & chairs, he cried, he groaned. Every thing he did made a statement about what he saw his mission to be. He crashed into people's consciousness with deeds, attitudes, and actions that had never been done, seen, or even heard of before. One could say he used his very blood to paint his message. That was how bold my saviour was /and still is.
Understanding that authority must be assumed within before it can be recognized externally, Jesus boldly took his aauthority. He did not wait until he had the total picture. He did not wait until there was a cloudless sky. He flew his banner high and carried it on a day to day basis. He took the canvas of his life & painted a message big enough for everyone to see.
My Lord & Savior did what he had to do, he called a spade a spade and apologized to no one ~ not out of arrogance, but out of boldness and clarity. About a decade and a half ago, a magazine article featured the story of a couple who set sail across the Pacific ocean on a small ship. One night a terrific storm arose. The ship tossed and bobbed, finally capsizing. The woman survived to tell the tale, but the man did not.  What is interesting is that the woman said she had sensed the danger and had warned her companion but he refused to listen to her, & the ship went down.
Later on in the article, the woman berated herself for not taking more power in the dangerous situation before tragedy struck.  "My life was at stake too she said: but because he was the captain i felt it wasn't my place to argue too much ". She regretfully said at one, "i should have been more adamant. I should have been more bold! Perhaps if i had been, the ship would not have sunk, and there would be two of us alive today ".
What is the cost of timidity? What are the rewards of being bold? My mum used to say "He who hesitates is lost"
Jesus was bold, and so should we.

✔ What would you do if you were ten times bolder? Go out and do it!

✔ What has it cost you in life not to be bold?
Work and pray on your answers and i'am sure you'll be strengthened by Jehovah.

LOVE & FRIENDSHIP

Friendship should be a natural component of love. Yet,it's shocking the number of married couples who are lovers but not friends.
To be your spouse's friend requires an openness and familiarity that some aren't willing to risk. Those who open their hearts to one another in this way find a special treasure.
The late author Tom Marshall wrote, "One of my most wonderful memories is the day my wife said to me, 'Do you know that you are my best friend? ' It is wonderful because i can think of the early years of our married life when she could not & would not have said that of me. It took me far longer than it should have to learn that besides a husband and a lover and a provider, my wife also needed me to be her friend. Tom Marshall had this verse from the song of songs written on her wife's grave stone: 'THIS IS MY BELOVED AND THIS IS MY FRIEND '"
Consider your relationships with those you love the most, particularly spouse or family members. Are there steps you can take to become a better friend to your spouse?
I pray this day, that each and everyone of us Will get to that level where we can confidently say "WE ARE FRIENDS WITH OUR SPOUSES " IJN. Amen.

WORKING THROUGH OUR FEARS.

Jesus was afraid. He talked about his fears to his staff. He wrestled with his fears to the point of sweating blood in the garden. Without fear, Jesus could not have been an example to us. He would have been just another man.
Many years ago my neighbour's son who practically adores me, looked up at me, and said you always look confident in whatever you wear (referring to me). I thanked him for the complement and geared him to grow up to be better than me someday, he looked up at me solemnly and said, "I'm not afraid".
Jesus was not afraid to grow up either, but he did have to face some painful and gruesome events in his life. He felt fear.
S.Jeffers,PhD, wrote a book called: Feel the fear ...and do it anyway.
she tells us that we will probably always have to deal with fear anyway! If we wait for our fears to disappear before we start, we will never even begin. The book of proverbs mentions the foolish farmer who waits for a cloudless sky before he plants his field. There is almost always a cloud somewhere in the sky, and those who are trained to look will probably see more than one. "Waiting for the perfect time is a great excuse & rationalization to stay stuck where you are".
Jesus knew that the best way to conquer fear was to face forward. The master did not shrink from going to Jerusalem, he boldly announced his identity to his executioners. My saviour got sick to his stomach, wept till sweat became blood - but he went through it anyway! Although he felt fear, he faced it anyway!
Fear is an ever-present fact of life. This point became clear to us (my partner & i) a few weeks back when we finally put aside our fears to embark on a project that fear has been disallowing us to start for over two years, though fears shouted, and distractions hooted and waved their arms, and stood in our view. Fear did all sorts of fearful stuffs, but because we knew that fear is bogus and unreal, we kept moving forward till fear as usual, disappears and we were able to move on. Jesus worked through his fears, and so should we.
I pray today, that every single fear that has been keeping you from your goals should disappear by you having the courage to face them IJN. Amen.

TIME ALONE WITH GOD.

Whenever Moses wanted some intimate conversation with the Lord, he went up to the tent of meeting. In that quiet place, away from the clamour of the camp of the Israelites, they spoke face to face, just like two friends.
We all need a place where we can go to get close to God. Jesus often withdrew to a mountain to pray (Luke 5:16 & Luke 6:12) and in teaching about how to commune with God he said, "when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father ..." (Mathew 6:6)
In our quiet place we can focus our attention totally on God. "Enter the secret place, and right in the center you'll find God, " -wrote Oswald Chambers. When we live in that secret place, then it becomes impossible for us to doubt God.
In Moses' secret place, he was able to tell the Lord about his concerns and receive the faith & courage he needed to lead the unfaithful people. Sometimes the Israelites were amazed at how long Moses spent in communion with God, but Moses wanted to know God so that he could obey him. The people of Israel got to see God's mighty acts, but because he spent time alone with God, Moses got to know God's ways. Where do you go to be alone with God?
Have you developed a friendship with God? I pray today that your relationship with God will begin to take a fruit bearing turn IJN. Amen.

THE GOD BEYOND COMPARE.

Isiah was terrified. Smoke began to swirl around the trembling pillars, the floor beneath him shook. God's presence filled the temple. Suddenly voices rang out: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty ....." (Isiah 6:1-8)
Whenever Scripture gives us a glimpse of the worship in heaven, multitude are praising God's holiness. Why? To be holy means to be set apart, to be different from all the rest. Pick any attribute of God. Take love for example. No one loves like our God. No one is as just, or as kind, or as righteous, or as powerful. God is beyond comparison. He is without any flaw that would weaken any aspect of his character.
The beings that Isiah saw are awestruck in the presence of this God. In essence, they were saying to God, "You're incredible! There is no one and nothing like you! "
What a magnificent God! What a wonder that this holy God chooses to dwell in us (1Corinthians 3:16-17).
Because he does, he asks us to set ourselves apart from sin. His very being is incompatible will evil.
So let's determine to keep our "temple" in order for our God.
Take time to think about who God is -and worship him, remember that he is on your side. Draw strength from him & resist evil today!

DO NOT DESPISE THE LITTLE THINGS!

In the old testament a verse reads, "A day of little things, no doubt, but who would dare despise it? " Jesus did not despise the little things. When he set out to change the world, he chose only a dozen people to work with - not a cast of thousands.
The more i study our lord's ways of networking the more convinced i am that he is and still the greatest network -er. Now, Jesus could have gone ahead and recruited himself a battalion of disciples for his mission on earth, but what did he do? He sponsored  just a few teachable dozen & packed value into every minute, every glance, every question & every encounter he had with them because he knew that out of this teachable few will eventually come the "CHRISTIANDOM " that we have today!
I see such an impatience with & disregard for little things in business that it disturbs me. Only yesterday, we were at a meeting with Monica Ross (our lovely sponsor) and the McDermids (the founder of our team, THE VISION GROUP) where they pointed out to Gugu & i the importance of having one on one meetings and mini meetings before going into the halls and churches. (Thank God for their wisdom & experience in our lives) .
I worked once with a boss who didn't want me to spend so much time with clients. "Go after the big clients"he said to me. "Leave the peanuts to the others. " And yet when the numbers were totalled, my combination of small sales outtotaled his few big ones. I thought to myself (as i resigned to start my own company), "Dinosaurs became extinct -yet rabbits still abound "
Aren't many of us hounded by a sense that only the big things count? I personally have had to battle a mindset that said whatever i did had to be the biggest and the best.  I couldn't just write a simple piece, it had to be a masterpiece & that wasted my time and resources as a journalist. Every creative person should know not to despise the little things -
* The first brush stroke
* The first word on paper
* The first phone call to a prospective client or friend .... they all count!
My Lord and my saviour did not spend his time creating operations manuals that could be franchised and duplicated by the millions. He hurried to see a little girl who was sick, focusing on getting her well;he knew that one boy's loaf of bread had all the necessary ingredients to feed thousands. Jesus kept it simple! & so should we! After all, he is our sponsor, indirectly as it may be.

IT'S GOOD KNOWING THAT YOU'RE NOT ALONE.

Have you ever had a sense of companionship with the devine source of your being? A source that not only knows you intimately but also cares for you as well.
Jesus spoke about God as father not to perpetuate the image of a patriarchal power chain so much as to imply a birthing from, a presence of nurturing and intense watchfulness, a deep pride of creation. An immutable connection. Love.
As much as i appreciate the power we each have within ourselves to create our destinies, i cannot escape the notion that above us hovers a benevolent, all knowing, and intensely kind-full presence ..... a personality of good.
I cannot be comfortable by the thought of some vast neutral overseer that regards me as merely a speck of light on a diamond-studded ocean, nor will i put my hopes, faith and trust in a god who doesn't talk back to me. As much as i desire & cherish my freedom and  pride myself in being an independent soul, capable to stretch my wings, i still want to know that someone is watching and cares about every move i make. I want a God who knows my middle name.
Jesus had this sense of life. In fact, if you looked at what drove him-especially on his darker days-it was his desire to please his father .....a desire to return to this very intense and personal embrace again. God invites us to join the movement, the swaying, the feeling of being in harmony with something larger than ourselves.
"It is a rare group that can stand linked arm in arm in a circle & not begin to sway. "
Author Lewis Thomas in his book "THE LIVES OF A CELL" informs us that all of earlier is continually humming ....... that even earthworms make drumming sounds, and termites hit a staccato note that no one can find reason for even after years of observation.
Jesus head the humming, too. He said the rocks and the trees can sing-that they will do so & have been. All of this for one simple reason: "WE ARE NOT ALONE"
Jesus knew he was not alone & we should as Christians too, know that we are not alone!

IGNORE THE HOLDUP & HOLD-ON!

A quick errand takes two hours because of unexpected traffic, an important letter gets lost in the mail, a long awaited job promotion goes to a less-experienced co-worker. When unexpected delays frustrate our plans, we sometimes want to make things happen. We also may start to question God or completely give up on our goals.
This delaying process, however, can be part of God's discipline. He wants our desires to be motivated by the prodding & empowering of the  holy spirit, not by our own efforts or our need for significance and achievement.
An angel reminded Zerubbabel to look to God's spirit, not his own resources, to build the temple.  God promised to remove the obstacles, to bless his work and complete it. Zerubbabel was then faced with the challenge to trust God's words to him and to accept his timing & ways to accomplish this task.
How do you respond when your plans are delayed? Can we learn something from Zerubbabel's example? I pray, that as from this day, may we begin to trust more in  Jehovah, accepting his timing and ways so that we can accomplish any task and fulfill our purpose here on earth IJN. Amen.

DIALOGUE WITH GOD

"I talk to Jesus everyday," I responded to this elderly pastor from my local church 8 years back (Pst. Dada. CAC.), trying to show this gentle, prayerful man of God that i have a relationship with the Lord.
"Young man, he said to me: millions of people talk to their gods every day. What I'll like to know is, does your God talk back to you? " startled, i had to think before i realized that God had indeed spoken to me many times.
The fact that our God speaks to us and encourages us to dialogue with him is what makes our relationship with him so different & special. God didn't intended that our prayer life be a one-way communication, with a list of requests from us or orders from him. One of the most important aspects of our prayer life is the need to discipline ourselves to listen.
We see this in Moses who went to speak "with God," not to him! (Exodus 33:11) observes that God spoke to Moses "as a man speaks with his friend." In a dialogue of friendship we take time with each other, sharing openly & listening carefully. Dialogue with God can include any topic. He's concerned with whatever concerns us.
When we pray, don't let's spend all the time talking. Let us take time to listen to the Lord as well.

BREAKING CHAINS OF INJUSTICE.

God's throne is established on justice and righteousness (Psalm89:14). He hates injustice, and he's called us to intercede in prayer as the way to break the chains of injustice. Whether we're praying for impoverished families in the US, political prisoners in Asia, xenophobic, rape & abused women in south Africa or oppressed Christians in nations where the Bible is banned, we are agreeing with God'swill when we pray for justice.
In 1982, children in a Christian school in southern California were learning how to pray for nations in turmoil. They began by praying for the release of Lech Walesa, the imprisoned of Poland's solidarity trade union.
Thousands of people worldwide were also praying for Walesa, who was eventually freed by Communist authorities and went on to become president of Poland in the nations first Democratic elections. Needless to say that, a similar case was that of Madiba (Nelson Mandela) in South Africa in 1994. Those southern California  children and all the children of Africa as well, saw that their prayers can make a direct difference in the  history of a nation.
Praying against injustice takes persistence -it may take months or even years before we see a breakthrough. But Jehovah is faithful. He always brings justice to those who cry out to him
What area of injustice can you respond against in your prayer?

AMAZING UNBELIEF

Jesus had returned to teach in his hometown of Nazareth, but this was no "welcome home" party. He longed to bless the people & yo preach the good news. But they took offense at one of their own, a carpenter, appearing with disciples and a message from God. Jesus would gladly have reached out with miraculous power to those who needed his healing touch but he could not. Certainly there was no lack of power or love on jesus' part, but the unbelief of the people held back the power of God.
One of the greatest hindrances to the  holy spirit functioning in power today is unbelief--those situations where individuals, families, churches, towns, nations and cultures reject God's purpose for themselves and doubt the word of God. In such an atmosphere, the fire of the holy spirit is put out. Conversely, in the atmosphere of faith, miracles can & still do happen!
Think about some situation in your life where you lack faith. Ask Jehovah to forgive your unbelief and help you to take steps of faith.

GOING DEEP WITH GOD.

God invites us to come and drink deeply-to plunge in and stay deep in the flow of his life-sustaining spirit. This is the living water Jesus was referring to when he said: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him"(John 7:37). Now that the holy spirit resides in the temple of our hearts, we can expect this living water to flow out from us in order to refresh others.
As we seek to know God through our personal devotions, we must not be afraid to yield ourselves fully to the holy spirit. As we receive his fûllness, we will be spiritually nourished and bear spiritual fruit that is a source of healing for others.
Don't just observe this river of waters, or tests its depth with your feet. Immerse yourself fully in it, allow the holy spirit to lead you deeper into God's life-giving water.
I fervently pray today, that each and every one of us will be a source of that fruit bearing, sickness healing, yoke breaking living water IJN. Amen.

EXPOSING OUR DARK SECRETS!

Idolatry today is more subtle and self-deceptive than in Jeremiah's time. Our "god " can be a friend, our self-image, our home or even our work for God. Whenever we constantly obey a need instead of God's spirit, we create an idol.
Because we depend so often on our idols for security and comfort, our hearts don't easily give them up. Emotions like fear, envy,  jealousy and the like are often indicators that an idol in our hearts  is being threatened.
A senior colleague of mine offered  these questions at a workshop to help us identify personal idols. I find them very rewarding if, they're sincerely applied:
* Who am i trying to please?
* What needs am i trying to meet?
* What insecurities do i pamper?
* What rewards am i seeking?
* What fears am i fleeing?
* With whom do i compete?
* What guilt am i covering?
* When is there enough?
The holy spirit is eager to expose and free us from idolatry and self-deception. We simply need to be willing. Let us invite the holy spirit to expose any idol in our hearts as we honestly answer the questions posed above.
Don't be afraid!  He wants to set us free!

WHO? ME?

WHO, ME?
Many of us subconsciously believe,"God could never use us". We let this chorus play over & over in our minds as we consider ourselves either too young or too old, not educated enough or otherwise unsuitable for God's purposes. But the truth is this: God can do anything, and he can do anything through us!
In Israel's early history, the anointing for ministry was given to specific individuals like Saul. But the lord said the time was coming when he would "pour out (his) spirit on all people" (Joel 2:28).
That time is now. It began on the day of Pentecost when God fulfilled this prophecy by pouring out his spirit on all who awaited him.
The crowd was amazed that God could use Galileans, men and women with little education or prestige. Peter commented: "This is what was spoken by prophet Joel " (Acts 2:16). The reality of the outpoured spirit still continues; we all can be filled with God's spirit.
Ask God for a great infilling of the holy spirit today! No ceremonies, no qualifications, no written examinations, just kneel down before him & ask in a simple conversation.

LIVING AS GOD INTENDED

Akin my friend had just bought a beautiful new car, (his 1st actually) .As he drove away from the dealership, the salesman's final word was: "Remember, sir, to read the manual. It will tell you how to get the best performance out of your car." Akin wasn't interested though, he just wanted to drive his car as fast & as far as he could. His attitude was: "What authority do the manufacturers have to tell me how to use my car? "
In one sense though, my friend was right. The manufacturers had no legal authority to make him read the manual, their authority was based on knowledge: They had designed the car, and they knew how it worked and how to care for it. Akin understood their perspective only too well when he burned out the engine a few months later.
Now change the characters. That book you read or would love to study every morning, the one probably next to you as you read this article is the "Manufacturer's Instructions " on life. Our Creator has given us the Bible to help us understand how to live. He doesn't force us to read it, but we would be foolish if we don't.
Of course, this analogy is limited. God does have authority over us and will one day hold us accountable for our actions. Through the centuries, he's given good laws to guide his people into a life -giving relationship with him.
God's law thought the Israelites how their personal & social lives should reflect his holiness, how their broken relationships could be restored, and how they could be set apart as a unique people. The Ten commandments are the summary of his law. He also gave "case laws " that are specific examples of how the laws were to be applied. Embodied in all these laws is the message Moses gave Israel at the end of his life: "I have set before you life and death, blessings & curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live " (Deuteronomy 30:19) May I affirm strongly at this juncture that: By following God's ways we are choosing life!
The good life is an ideal that the Bible continually sets before us. It's what life was like in the Garden of Eden. With disobedience came death and separation from God, the source of life. A world emerged that was completely out of accord with God's purposes. But he never gave up! His righteous laws held out hope for "The good life "-both now and in the future. The vision proclaimed by Isaiah must surely be one of the most powerfully touching in the Bible. It describes a time of joy, abundance and harmony with the Creator.
When Jesus came to this earth, that good life became even more near to us because Jesus broke the curse of sin and death that was causing the earth to decay. The good life can begin right now for anyone who will lay hold of the promises of God. And when we've lived this life to the fullest, we have an even better fulfillment of a promise to inherit - The joy of spending eternity with our maker.
I am certainly looking forward to such times!!!!

PRAYERS THAT SHAKE NATIONS

God could easily impose his will on the world, but it's not his character to rule us with an iron fist. He would rather have us:  love and obey him by our own choice.  He also wants us to be in partnership with him through prayer to change situations that are contrary to his will.  This outward, selfless kind of prayer is called  INTERCESSION.  Intercessors seek God's help on behalf of individuals, cities & nations.
The faithful prayers of one Godly person can change the destiny of a whole nation.
In 1 Samuel 7:5-9, the people of Israel were facing an enemy invasion and pleaded with the prophet Samuel to intercede before the lord for them. Samuel said he would only do so if they would stop worshipping idols and repent of their sins. When they did,  Samuel cried unto God on their behalf, and the Lord saved them from their enemies.
Let us identify something outside of our own situation today:  for which we would like to intercede. Let's ask God to show us specific ways to pray.

LET THE SPARKS FLY!

LET THE SPARKS FLY!
With voices getting louder by the moment and faces turning beet red, the two roommates squared off in sharp disagreement.
Though they were close friends, their strong personalities and opinions seemed to draw them regularly into conflict. As they worked harder to listen to each other and respond in a godly way, God began to shape them. After some months together, they were astonished at how many "rough edges " God had polished through their occasional disputes.
Iron is sharpened by rubbing two equally hard pieces together. The friction polishes the metal but also causes the spark to fly! In the same way, the Lord uses our relationships to sharpen us spiritually. The habits and personalities  of our companions may grate on us at times, but these conflicts, even if they don't result in heated sparring, serve a useful purpose.
When our different strength, opinions & perspectives rub against one another, qualities such as pride, obstinacy & selfishness get ground away until we are sharpened tools, effective and ready for use.
Consider your difficult relationships. Can you see how Jehovah is using them to sharpen some rough areas in your life? (Proverbs 27:15-17)
